It's Kind of Technical

Colorado Catholics

Lake Loveland
I’m in lovely Loveland, Colorado for a two-week training session.  To make sure that I stay on the right spiritual path while I’m away from home, I decided to find a church to attend while I’m here.  My goal was to attend daily Mass a couple of times a week, in addition to Sunday Mass.

I selected St. Joseph’s, located in Fort Collins.  So far, I’ve only been able to make it to daily Mass once — today.  I have to say that I’m very impressed.  The parish is a fairly traditional one in appearance, with a beautiful school attached.  The people were very friendly and rather pious.  And you should have seen the long lines for Confession after Mass!

I’ve decided that I’m going to drive up to the cathedral in Cheyenne, Wyoming for Sunday Mass.  Looking forward to it!  This is a beautiful area of the country.

Sadly Secular

Sadly, my home state has just been re-crowned the most secular in the nation. Of the people polled, 27 percent of Oregonians (yes, that’s what we call ourselves) claim no affiliation with any religion, compared with 16 percent nationally. The arrogance of my fellow citizens doesn’t surprise me, but it definitely frustrates me.

Catholicism especially has taken its lumps over the past decade or so, which I’m sure is partially due to the abuse scandals that were handled so poorly. Fortunately, these numbers have been offset by the large number of Catholic immigrants.

So what does this all mean? Well, it’s just more statistical information that shows that our culture is exceedingly hedonistic.

A Miracle

My grandmother is nearly 89 years old, and her health is definitely failing. She doesn’t get around very well anymore, and not at all without her walker. Her eyesight is poor, and her memory isn’t what it once was.

Today, my mother found my grandmother slumped over in her chair, and completely unresponsive. She was breathing, but would respond to no amount of shouting or shaking. An ambulance was called and my grandmother was rushed to the hospital, where she was subjected to a battery of medical tests. These tests included much poking, prodding, and invasive examination, along with a few more refined procedures.
